No Newts Is Bad News For Us...


...And our amphibian friends.

I have a confession to make. I love amphibians, especially frogs. My fondness for frogs, made this story a tragic one.


Scientists believe the world's amphibians are facing an unprecedented onslaught of environmental threats.
They say as many as 122 species may have become extinct since 1980 and a third of known amphibians face oblivion.

If you aren't as fond of the little guys as I am, you may think that this isn't that big of deal in the grand scope of things. How wrong you would be. Do I have to remind you that all living things are interconnected? Here's the gist...

...amphibians (are) "the canaries in the coal mine", as their highly permeable skins are very sensitive to environmental changes, including in water and air quality.

Russell Mittermeier, president of Conservation International, said: "Amphibians are one of Nature's best indicators of overall environmental health.


Ask not for whom the bell toads. It toads for thee.
