Gay Sera Sera

When asked if he thought being gay was a choice, John Kerry felt the need to offer Mary Cheney as an example during the last presidential debate...

We're all God's children, Bob. And I think if you were to talk to Dick Cheney's daughter, who is a lesbian, she would tell you that she's being who she was, she's being who she was born as.

That was a good answer to the question; it would have been better if he had left Mary out of it. Was it, as Lynne Cheney accused, a Cheap and tawdry political trick? I may be wrong, Lynne, but cheap and tawdry is redundant. I will have to admit that it was gratuitous and a tad boorish.

Still, I can't imagine why it would send the Cheney's and the Bush campaign into such an emotional tizzy; oh, I forgot, being gay is bad.

Mary Cheney is openly gay and involved in her father's campaign; a campaign that seeks to pander to its base by attempting to constitutionally ban gay marriage in the United States. Her sexual orientation would not be of any interest, if her daddy's boss hadn't led the attacks against gay marriage; but Dumbya did, and that makes the Cheney family dynamics open for discussion (That doesn't mean we need to discuss it, though.).

Dick Cheney thanked John Edwards for his kind words regarding the Cheney Family during the V.P. debate. This is what Edwards said...

Now, as to this question, let me say first that I think the vice president and his wife love their daughter. I think they love her very much. And you can't have anything but respect for the fact that they're willing to talk about the fact that they have a gay daughter, the fact that they embrace her. It's a wonderful thing. And there are millions of parents like that who love their children, who want their children to be happy.

Why was it okay then and suddenly tawdry now? What could have changed? Oh yeah, Kerry is getting too much positive attention for kicking Dumbya's ass in the debates. The Bush League must be desperate to divert attention from Dumbya's performance during the debates; or maybe they don't want any more talk about the Preznit's bulge.

So, now the Cheney's are making the rounds with their mock anger and hurt. I don't remember any concern for Mary when the family (minus Mary and her partner) took the stage during the RNC.

Apparently, the Cheney's stand on this vital issue boils down to this...

She's our lesbian and only we can drag her into public discourse; but, since our constituents are frightened of homosexuals, we'd just rather keep her up in the balcony and out of sight.

This non-issue is republican static hoping to drown out Kerry's message. Kerry should offer a mea culpa and not waste another minute on this.
