Katrina's Wake
The unbelievable devastation and unimaginable suffering that has been wrought by Katrina leaves one feeling very small and quite useless.
Not that this is a new feeling for me. As there is little I can do but make some insignificant monetary donation to the relief efforts (here's your chance to do so), I will continue on with the daily grind and be thankful I am safe and sound in my corner of the world.
My daily grind just happens to include making light of the President and lame attempts at inappropriate humor.
It was astounding how breathlessly all of the news commentators announced that the President had cut short his vacation so that he could take charge of putting others in charge of rescue and relief efforts for the victims of Katrina's fury. Wow. He cut 2 days off of his month-long vacation.
Of course, 3 days later, New Orleans is beginning to resemble one of the lower rings of Hell; and there still doesn't seem to be a cohesive plan of action. Is this how Homeland Security would respond to another terrorist attack? A terrorist attack that was anounced several days before it actually happened?!
It is rumored that the President was going to declare a war on nature and call for an invasion of the Atlantic Ocean. We should fight the hurricanes there so that we don't have to fight them here! Cooler heads prevailed and he went for the folksy platitudes speech instead.
I'm also waiting to hear how Katrina impacted the Natalee Holloway case; I'm sure Rita Cosby will let us know.
Let's all hope that New Orleans, Biloxi and the rest of the suffering areas and their citizens get the assistance they need and eventually find themselves healed and ready to face a brighter future.
