Film Conjecture: The Village

Tomorrow brings us the opening of the newest M. Night Shyamalan movie, The Village. Unfortunately, it seems that his fans (of which I count myself) expect/require a startling/amazing twist in each of his movies. As enjoyable as such twists are (although none could be as fresh as the one in The Sixth Sense), the expectation seems to diminish the actual twist.

As an admitted fan of Shyamalan's work, I will now seek to expose the twist in The Village...Since I am only speculating, I can't really call this a SPOILER; but you may want to skip my guess in case it is right and spoils the movie for you.

If you are not familiar with the film, the summary is as follows...

The Village' depicts the thrilling tale of an isolated town confronting the astonishing truth that lies just outside its borders. At first glance, this village seems picture perfect, but this close-knit community lives with the frightening knowledge that creatures reside in the surrounding woods. The evil and foreboding force is so unnerving that none dare venture beyond the borders of the village and into the woods. But when curious, headstrong Lucius Hunt plans to step beyond the boundaries of the town and into the unknown, his bold move threatens to forever change the future of the village.

Possible Spoiler...

My twist-theory is that, although the date is established as 1897 from a tombstone at the film's beginning, once Lucius Hunt steps beyond the borders of the Village and the woods; the villagers will find themselves in modern (although, not necessarily current day) times. It is the fear of the unknown that keeps the villagers cut off from the rest of the world and stuck in their own version of the present.

...End Possible Spoiler

I hope to be seeing the movie over the weekend, but I have no problem with anyone confirming or debunking my guess in comments if they get to see it first. Of course, anyone who hates spoilers should avoid the comments section.
