The Word Is Given: esprit d'escalier

esprit d'escalier \es-PREE des-cah-lee-É\, n.
french.

not directly translatable, but "esprit d'escalier" means roughly
"wit of the staircase." ?

the French use "esprit d'escalier" to refer to the regret one
feels after barely missing an opportunity to dish out a perfect
comeback. quip-challenged people (e.g. me) know all about this
phenomenon.

Will this make you feel better about the affliction that affects so many people around the world? Maybe there should be a telethon to raise money to find a cure; a sort of esprit de corp for the cause. I might think of something wittier to say after I sign off.
