Wow. Cordova, Alabama really put a heartless bastard in the mayor's office
The town, hit hard by the April 27th tornado, has a ban on single-wide trailers... like the ones that FEMA provides for those left homeless by disasters.

Mayor Jack Scott refuses to lift the ban (even temporarily) for the families left homeless. He did allow the trailers for the police department, a local bank and a pharmacy, because they are for the greater good. Apparently, giving his constituents shelter from the elements isn't part of that greater good.

His concern is for the aesthetics of the town. He doesn't want unsightly FEMA trailers offending the eyes of the community, if they stay too long after the disaster. Of course, any temporary waiver for the ban could include a deadline.

Maybe I'm just down on this jerk because I live in a trailer.

I am having a hard time being Merry tonight. A long-time friend of mine, Paula Burke Conner, was taken off life support this afternoon; she died shortly thereafter.

She was incredibly smart and tremendously funny. She leaves behind countless friends, 3 children, her husband and family. My thoughts are with them tonight.

This fatal ordeal was swift and unexpected. It does bring the true gifts we take for granted everyday into sharp focus. Before you open your gifts today, pull your loved ones close and let them know how grateful you are to have them in your life. Call an old friend and let them know your thinking of them.

The internet can bring all of us closer together.... put it to good use.

I finally got around to watching the Scream Awards on Spike last night and saw this commercial and could not believe my eyes...

Actually, this is a longer version of the one I saw and manages to out-tacky the shorter version.

Axe has always seemed to be aimed at juvenile mouth-breathing males, but they have really lowered the bar for this one.

I guess the modern male needs a special tool for a more thorough clean. I thought most guys didn't have a problem with touching themselves while in the shower and lathering up those intimate areas?

Spider-Man: Turn Off The Play!!

It has been so long since my last blog post that something important must have occurred to bring me back here. Was it politics...religion... or some other epic event?
No! It is the unveiling of the godawful costume designs for Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark.

I am normally offended by the use of such pejoratives... but they are so GAY... and not in a good way... I mean the kinda GAY that most homosexuals would make unrelenting derisive fun of.

Apparently, the Green Goblin is going to be a drag queen. The other villain pictured is Swiss Miss; a woman made up of Swiss Army knives.... I am not making it up.

If you think the costumes are unbelievable, get a load of the sets...

I love broadway shows and musicals as much as the next gay man... and I'm not gay (Not that there's anything wrong with that!), but this is just way too out there for what should be a quintessentially fantastic tale set in a completely believable reality.

Hopefully, the songs will be great and I can enjoy the music without having to see this visual atrocity.

I'm just sayin'.

Toying with my emotions

Wow. Toy Story 3 is probably the best movie of 2010.

I didn't think that a 2nd sequel could possibly outshine anything that Pixar has done to date, but this one did.

It is a laugh-out-loud funny and deeply moving film that had me tear up in spots and lose it during the final 15 minutes of the film.

It should be nominated for an Oscar for best picture and not in the animated movie category.

I will be seeing it again and again.

Yes, I realize that I have overlooked the death of quite a few notable celebrities.

Their deaths were indeed cause for sorrow, but I have been caught up in the unfolding environmental catastrophe in the gulf. The picture below captures a tiny moment of the devastation that will only continue to grow exponentially until it effects us all.

As a result, my usual role of celebrity obituarian (is just made that word up) has been ignored.

This just makes me sad and very worried about all the coastal areas that will be affected by this for years to come.

LOST In Translation

All in all, I was not satisfied with the Lost series finale. The so-called sideways universe/purgatory managed to raise more unanswered questions than the previous 5 seasons had. Not being one of those warm-fuzzy fans of quasi-religious claptrap, the going toward the light ending was rather lame. Was there great character moments and the return of old friends? Yes, but most of the characters weren't even in character through most of the show. Did we get an ending to the island drama-rama? Sort of. It did end with good overcoming evil... if you thought MIB was evil. I still have some doubts... the poor guy was raised by some crazy bitch who killed his real mom (for very vague reasons that didn't seem to good to me only to snap when he learned the truth about her and was smoked by his brother and sentenced to a very long life imprisoned on the island). I kinda felt sorry for him.

Nonetheless, the battle was won and Jack died and gave Hurley the island. Then, we immediately jump to the death of everyone and that it is the end. The finale played on our love of the characters and insta-nostalgia for the series by presenting the half-assed wrap up. Did I get all weepy? Yes, but that doesn't mean I was satisfied.

Furthermore, they promise to answer more of the mysteries on the DVD!!! I shouldn't have to pay for the damned answers!

Not a horrid finale, but far from impressive.

Personally, I would have stayed with Ben.

How To Train Your Dragon... to kick ass at the box office!

I know this is old news, but I just wanted to gloat about the amazing success of How To Train Your Dragon. It opened with a 43 million dollar weekend and was considered a disappointment by industry insiders because it didn't open as well as Dreamworks' last 3D movie, Monsters Vs. Aliens. MvA went on to make $198,351,526. Dragon has made $202,644,160 as of today and is still in the top 5 for weekend box office after 7 weeks. It actually reclaimed the no. 1 weekend spot on its 5th weekend of release.

Let's hear it for word of mouth! It is a great movie. If you haven't seen it yet, go!

to me. It appears someone else came to the same conclusions regarding belief in a higher power and did a Google search to see if anyone else had come up with the term Apathostic. Iron Man 2: Equal Sequel

Yeah, I saw it and loved it. Unlike the majority of people reviewing the movie on the web, I believe it was a sequel that was just as well done and entertaining as the first one.

Was there a a few too many things going on in the film that weren't as neatly addressed as they could have been (not should have been)? Maybe, but I enjoyed every one of them. I also enjoyed the small nods to the Marvel film universe that they are trying to build.

Maybe my love for the comics has blinded me in this instance... but I don't think so.

This recent article in the Economist show the mental block that the anti-tax folks have when it comes to their rage against taxes and government involvement in their lives.

The majority of people asked, would rather cut spending than raise taxes; but when asked what government programs they would cut too accomplish this, they couldn't come with any other than foreign aid.

I, being a leftist/liberal, would be happy if the defense budget was trimmed to pay for more of my socialist agenda.

But that's just me.

Of course, from the above poll, the majority doesn't seem to eager to cut those programs either.

How To Train Your Dragon

Just wanted to take a moment to make sure everyone goes out and sees this absolutely wonderful movie. I'm not just saying that because Craig Ferguson voices one of the characters either; I'm saying it because the movie is worth seeing....more than once. I saw it in 2D and 3D and was thoroughly entertained both times.

It is a family movie with a great story and great characters. It's a buddy movie and more. Its about a boy and his dragon, a boy and his father and a boy and the girl he desperately wants to impress. Overall, it is a story about a boy who takes a stand against his village and their way of life.

Don't just take my word for it. Entertainment Weekly gave it an A-, and they are notoriously tough reviewers.

It was number one at the box office last weekend with a $43 million dollar take, but fell short of it's projected earnings and was said to be a disappointment for Dreamworks to the extent that their stock took a hit. I am hoping that word-of-mouth will improve it's box-office numbers. It deserves it.

Go see it today.... and tomorrow!

Not this time. I have sit by and watched and listened to all of the coverage of the big news.... Vice President, Joe Biden used the f-word when telling the president that the passage of health care reform was "a big fucking deal".

Good god! It's not like he took to the microphone to proclaim the obvious. He leaned in to the president and made his observation. It just happened to be picked up by the ever-present microphones that surround the president.

Why is this considered another one of Biden's verbal gaffes? He's a grown man and was speaking to another grown man and coworker. His use of the f-bomb only serves to endear him to me even more... He's just one of the guys.

Give him a fucking break!

He could have been even more endearing and told the gathered press corp that the tea party is chock-full-of-fucknuts and the republican party could kiss his ass! The Dems pwned 'em.

I'm not sure he is telling the truth about his shame or ,especially, that this was his first political rally.

Healthcare reform passes the house

The Democrats finally showed that they can govern if their backs are against the wall. Republicans were shocked and outraged that the Dems finally figured out they were the majority.

The picture on the left captures the agony of the right. John "Agent Orange" Boehner almost blew a vessel.

I can only wish the bill did more and that more of what it does do would begin sooner. I know we will lose some races come election-time but hope we can remain in control of both houses.

Just read that Peter Graves has died. He is mostly remembered as Jim Phelps on the TV series Mission Impossible, but I will always remember him as Clarence Oveur in the comedy classic, Airplane!

I have to admit, I got a little misty-eyed upon hearing about the death of Corey Haim.

While I haven't followed his career and personal ups and downs since his productive years, I am a big fan of Lucas, Lost Boys and even Dream A Little Dream. The guy was a talented young actor that never made the next step into adult roles. Whether that was because of his drug problems or just bad luck, it is a shame that we didn't get to see if that promising talent could have reached new levels in more mature roles.

Oscars...The Grouch

They managed to make the Academy Awards far less entertaining without trimming any of the running time.

First, let me be clear, I don't mind how long the show lasts; I would just like it to be entertaining. Martin and Baldwin were painful to endure. The jokes were weak and the delivery was weaker. Martin did a much more impressive and funny job on his own, so I am going to have to blame the writers for most of it.

The John Hughes tribute was nicely done, and, thankfully, there were some good acceptance speeches to make up for the presentation.

Even Neil Patrick Harris was wasted on an intro song with painfully crappy lyrics.

Who thought that dumping the best song performances and replacing it with the underwhelming dancing with the scores presentation... Yeah, that was an improvement that injected the show with some energy....Zzzzzzzzz.

Ben Stiller's bit was the most amusing thing of the night. Take that for the praise that it is.

I would also like to point out that Elinor Burkett has no class.You can read about her tacky behavior here.

Temple Grandin

Trying to clear out my DVR while I'm on leave from work, I finally got around to watching the HBO movie about the life of Temple Grandin.

I cannot recommend this movie highly enough. If you don't have HBO, then rent it when it becomes available. It is an amazing story about an amazing woman, and Claire Danes is astounding in a performance that deserves every award possible.

Inappropriate humor

I have been following Craig Ferguson's quest for a robot skeleton sidekick and am happy that Grant Imahara is going to build him one. Craig has decided on naming the sidekick Geoff Peterson but is receiving many suggestions from fans. I can't play that game because I have an inappropriate sense of humor.

Being a skeleton (signifying death) and a robot (a mechanized man), I thought that the obvious name for his new sidekick would be Ded Mech-Man. I am sure, were he still with us, Ed McMahon would find it amusing and be honored at the tribute... especially because it is inappropriate.

Winter is Coming next spring

Just thought I would be one of the last to mention that HBO has given the greenlight for A Game Of Thrones to go to series.

The first season, covering the aforementioned first book in the series, will have 10 episodes to tell the tale; much better than a 2-3 hour movie.

Oh yeah, the bandages came off Friday and I am now wearing band-aids and bicycle gloves. Pictures later.

Recovering

I came through the procedure and am at home and relatively comfortable.

I woke up, this morning, with a migraine but managed to get going (even though I couldn't take anything for it) and head for the fun. I got there and made it through the paperwork and preop preparations. They told me I would be getting some narcotics in my IV, and I hoped that would help with the migraine as well. It did take the sharp edges off until I was wheeled into surgery and put completely out.

Unfortunately, the migraine was waiting for me when I emerged from the anesthesia. Between the migraine and nausea, I was miserable and managed some real fine projectile vomiting (got some amazing distance). I finally recovered enough to head home and get in bed and actually fall asleep. I woke later with the migraine still holding on. Fortunately, the pain pill I took upon waking took care of my hands and head.

I can't do much of anything that requires any pressure or dexterity... about everything, but I do have my fingers free enough to type this update.

Surgery Eve

For once, I will have an excuse for failing to blog. Tomorrow, I go in for my double carpal-tunnel surgery. They don't like to do both hands at one time, but I told them that I couldn't afford to be off 6 weeks for each hand.

Of course, the first five days will be quite an ordeal. The doc says I will be unable to do the simplest of tasks or manage my own personal hygiene... yeah... think about that.

This is wonderful news for my wife. I told her I will avoid requiring such care if at all possible.

If there is any way I can peck out a post, I will let you know how it goes as soon as possible.

I've been a fan of Ebert for years and only recently found his blog. It isn't just about film either; it is a look inside the mind and life of a very insightful and thoughtful man. Check it out. I've been reading it off and on, but wasn't aware of the severity of his condition.

I knew he has been battling cancer for many years but wasn't aware of the loss of his lower jaw. His story is unbelievable and inspiring. Go read it and imagine yourself in his situation.

Aging Bull....Sh*t

I remember a time when I didn't groan when I stood from a sitting position. I remember a time when pain wasn't a daily visitor. Ah, the good old days! Or should I say, the good young days.

I seem to have done something to my right shoulder that resulted it agonizing pain every time I attempt to raise it too high or lift things too heavy. I should probably see a doctor but already have surgery on both my wrists scheduled for the 26th. That will require me to be off work for 6 weeks, and I'm hoping the time off will allow for the shoulder to improve on its own.

Thankfully, I have short-term disability that will cover about 70% of my wages. Unfortunately, the other 20% will still be needed to pay all of the bills. We have juggled the budget and should make it through... as long as nothing unexpected occurs.

Let's hope for only the expected.

Just heard about Robert Parker's death.

Really loved his Spenser series and the movie made from his western novel, Appaloosa is one of my wife's favorites.

Parker died at his desk, which seems to be a fitting end for any writer.

I just finished reading this series by Daniel Abraham and cannot possibly heap enough praise upon it to actually do it justice. I can only tell you that it is one of the finest fantasy series I have ever read. The characters are vividly portrayed and fully realized; and their story is epic in scope, yet more intimately engaging than anything I've read in years. I was hooked after the first book, A Shadow in Summer, and quickly made my way through the three remaining books.

Abraham has vaulted to the top of my must read list.

Got our computer back but still not sure if it is working correctly. Just thought I'd post so that anyone interested will know I am still out here.

I wish I could say that all is well, but I would be lying. Things at work aren't going well (because of my own stupidity) and I may well be unemployed by Christmas Eve. I would explain myself better, but I don't like to discuss work in too much detail in case future employers google me. It is just one of those convergence of events that lead to dismissal because of policy... because the rules must be obeyed.

Other than that bad piece of luck, Christmas preparations are running smoothly, except for 3 gifts that have yet to appear in my mailbox.

If I don't get back here before then, I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a new and improved 2010!

Did you even notice that I was gone?

For the last month and maybe until next year, we are without our NEW desktop computer and are at the mercy of our computer fix-it specialists until our copy of Windows 7 comes in and other problems get worked out. We could hook up our old desktop but I am clueless as to how to program it thru the wireless router.

'Til the new one in fixed or I become a computer genius in my sleep, we are stuck sharing the laptop. Have I ever mentioned that I absolutely HATE typing on a laptop?
Well, I do!!

That I why I have been MIA and will probably remain that way for a while. I just wanted to pop in and let anyone that might stop by know that I am still around.

I hope that your Thanksgiving was a nice one and that the rest of this season and year bring you peace, joy and prosperity.

I just want to throw my own examples of why I make sure to never miss The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. Mike Norton provided a few choice ones the other day, but I don't think we should stop until we convince everyone to watch this show. Craig is the true King of Late Night!! You cannot argue this point... He loves puppets and he's not afraid to use 'em.

By the way, he has the best damn opening theme of any late night show....ever.

In case you have any interest at all...

I managed to avoid getting fired long enough to get the transfer I had asked for. This coming Thursday will be my last day on the third shift and then I will take Fri-Sun off for O.C.'s birthday weekend before starting the new shift.

In the new issue of Entertainment Weekly, Mark Harris frets and moans over the preview for 2012 and the orgy of mass-destruction that I enjoyed so much.

He wept for the millions of people who are dying, because what are they, in the grand scheme of things, but extras. Yes, it is a disaster movie of epic proportions and lots of unseen people die... I believe that is the definition of a disaster. The underlying thrill of the disaster movie (and horror) is that you are not one of those unlucky victims. Is that somehow immoral? I think not.

He goes on to bemoan the scene of the escape plane zipping between two parallel high-rise towers just seconds before those towers collapse into each other, presumably killing thousands of CGI flyspeck humans. OMFG!!! We can't show such a thing!! After 911, it is horribly inhuman to show such a thing in frivolous entertainments!

Bite me, Mark Harris. This movie is nothing but a thrill-ride of escapist entertainment much like the campy disaster flicks of the 70's. It is not a moral failing to derive enjoyment from such films. Tragedy strikes all over the world on a daily basis, but I don't think that should dictate what can or can't be included in books and films in deference to those that suffered and lost loved ones to such events. Most likely, they won't choose to see such films. Is it somehow insensitive that many do choose to see such films? Life is insensitive and it isn't about them or me for that matter it just is.

Mental Meandering and Blithering

Work has been very stressful and tense for the last few months and I have been waiting for an opening on another shift. A spot has opened and I am supposed to be transferring... I got sent home tonight by the main reason for my current job dissatisfaction (for my bad attitude) and am not sure if I'm still employed or not. I will return to work tomorrow and see what my status is.

Enough of that stuff.

I want to apologize to Gordon for not telling him about the joy and wonder that is The Big Bang Theory. The reason for this lapse and the fact that it wasn't on my list of the best shows on TV, is that I don't watch it regularly. I came in late and had scheduling conflicts that kept me from recording it. Still, I loved the episodes that I did manage to see; so much that I have plans to buy the seasons on DVD.

Let me correct any oversights and slights to this fine show and tell everyone to WATCH IT!!! I also want to take time to tell everyone to check out How I Met Your Mother; it is another often missed but always loved sitcom from CBS.

Must go now and try not to think about my job insecurity.

The Best TV Out There

Since I've felt the need to share my opinion on the best comics out there, I might as well share my list of fave current TV fare. Without a doubt, Glee tops my list of the best stuff on TV. It doesn't hurt that this week's episode will feature Kristen Chenoweth and a Queen song!!! The show is well written and the cast does a fantastic job with the musical performances. Check it out.

I caught the first episode of Flash Forward and was intrigued by the premise and interested in the characters. I am on board for the season.

Fringe continues to please and, although I haven't seen it (and apparently no one else watched either), I have faith that Dollhouse will continue to improve... until it is axed.

Dexter and Mad Men are both continuing their greatness and The Mentalist, Castle and Criminal Mind also continue to entertain.

That is my list of the best... so far this season.

The Best Comics Out There

Inspired by Gordon's recent post, I thought I would give you my list of current faves on the comic rack.

Like Gordon, I too believe that Nova, Guardians Of The Galaxy and Blackest Night are not to be missed. Especially the Guardians; any book that features Rocket Raccoon is an automatic winner with me but most critics agree that both of Marvel's cosmic books are must reads. Blackest Night is turning out to be not just and epic event but another must read.

I also want to recommend the Incredible Hercules as a must-read. It is another well-reviewed but reader-impaired title.

My pick for the best comic currently on the racks has got to be The Unwritten from DC Comics/Vertigo. I was a big fan of Mike Carey's Lucifer, so I didn't hesitate to pick up his newest series (the $1 first issue didn't hurt either). After only a handful of issues, it shows the real promise of ranking up there with works like Sandman and Y: The Last Man. It is a book that exlores the blurry line between truth and fiction that surround the life of Tommy Taylor... Is he the son of the famous author of a fantasy series or his fictional creation? I urge you to rush out and get your hands on this book.

Let me first say that Neil Patrick Harris is the best damn awards show host since Billy Crystal. They should be throwing money at him to do the Oscars. But enough about Neil...

The show was great and I'm sure every winner deserved their award (although I still don't understand the love for 30 Rock, but I wasn't paying that much attention after the first award was given. Kristen Chenoweth won for Best Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series for Pushing Daisies. The show deserved more recognition and at least another season to find an audience, and Kristen Chenoweth is a goddess of epic talent (but that's just my opinion/obsession)!!

It was great to see Dr. Horrible and the gang interrupt the proceedings!

Mad Men won for best drama and proved it witht he episode that ran opposite the awards. You should check out that episode even if you don't follow the show... it will be remembered as one of those memorable moments in TV history.

All in all, a great night for TV and TV fans... and Kristen Chenoweth worshippers.

I managed to catch the first episode of Marvel Super Hero Squad and was torn between wanting to like it and wanting to hurl. I had to come to terms with the fact that it is obviously intended for a much, much younger audience that likes their heroes more dwarf-like and the occasional snot and fart jokes.

I will not be watching anymore episodes, but hope it has a long run and turns a new generation into comic readers and not just crappy TV fans.

DVR backlog

Like Tony Collett, I am a victim of my DVR's ability to record anything and everything that catches my fancy. My DVR can record up to 150 hours of TV and I curently have about 50 hours of shows stored on it. I have just started watching the second season of Pushing Daisies, am waiting for Disney XD to get around to playing the 16the episode of The Spectacular Spider-Man so that I can watch all of the episodes of the 2nd season in order (I'm anal that way), and have all of the new Monk and Psych episodes to get through. I still have the final 2 episodes of Reaper and all of the 2nd season of Leverage mocking my lack of time and love of TV. There are also some of my favorite Static Shock episodes and other odds and ends still to be seen.

Now the new TV season is upon us and I still haven't got enough time to see everything... maybe 150 hours isn't so much after all.

Regarding Henry

Yes, there have been far too many famous passings of late and I have refrained from commenting on them because I've been trying to not make every other post an obit.
Still, I could not let the death of Henry Gibson go unremarked.

Not a big star and certainly not a household name, Henry Gibson was one of those actors that everyone knows on sight even if they can't always place his name. I've been a fan of his since his days on Laugh-In
and his voice performance in the animated adaptation of Charlotte's Web was absolutely perfect; he will always be the voice of Wilbur in my head.

My sincerest condolences to his family, friends and fans.

Mobilehome Improvements

The mobile home makeover is still going on. We've got a new porch. We had someone recoat the roof and replace the storm door and someone else replaced the skirting. We are looking at having them strip and paint the shed, shutters and front door. I would have attempted some of these things, but my carpal tunnel makes such major tasks near impossible. I am looking to have surgery to alleviate that in the spring. Not that I mind paying other people to do things which I would most likely screw up somehow.

We just got our car repaired and are starting to save for a newer one in the spring.

It is nice to have a bit of money for such real needs.

Frog Day Afternoon

Last week, at work, one of the cleaning crew waved me over to see something that he was looking at on the floor. When I got over to where he was sweeping, I found the dried carcass of one of those Dwarf African Frogs that we sell in the pet department. Being me, I picked up the poor little critter only to find out that one tiny webbed foot was feebly moving. I quickly put in a container of water and in a short time the little thing was fit as a fiddle. Once again, me being me, I decided to buy a 1.5 gallon aquarium and make a home for the hardy little survivor.

I have since decided to get a bigger aquarium and a companion frog and spend too much time surfing the web for info on making the frog's life perfect. My wife and Only Child are sure I have lost my mind and I tend to agree....

During President Obama's address to Congress last night, Congressman Joe Wilson made a fool of himself in front of the country by shouting out, You Lie! in response to the President's assertion that illegal immigrants would not be covered by the healthcare plan he proposes.

It has been a busy time since last we spoke. We have a change in our financial situation that now allows us to make some long-needed home improvements and buy food! Yeah! It isn't exactly winning the big lotto, but it certainly relieves me of the immense pressure I've been laboring under for the last few years. Let's hear it again...Yeah!

I see that while I stepped out, President Obama has continued his less than stellar descent into the uninspiring world of pathetic pandering to the republican minority. I also observed the republican party becoming more and more batshit crazy and overall moronic.... moreso than usual.

Does not compute

Haven't been able to get online as of late...we crashed and burned. In hopes of never losing all of our photos, music and other works, we bought a computer that has a mirror hard drive that automatically made a backup of all we did. Last week we had some problems with the computer and had to have a guy come out to look at it. Thankfully, it was still under warrenty (barely). The guy replace the power source and tweaked some other stuff but told us that the backup drive was bad and they would send a replacement out the next day... he told me that it was easy to replace and I could do it myself or call for assistance.

The drive came and I decided to be safe and call for technical assistance. Keep in mind that the computer was still running fine without the backup drive. I knew things weren't going to be that simple, when I told him I had the tower open and I needed to know which drive was the backup. His reply, Let's try the one on the right. After a couple of hours, it became apparent that the computer was not going to work with the assistance I received. The guy had to come out the next day and redo the job. After an attempt to get the backup drive intitialized and what have you, he came out and told us that the main drive was now dead.

We now have new drives and power source and none of our files. We have paid the local company that provides our internet service to attempt a salvage operation the bad drives to see if anything can recovered. Only Child is heartbroken that all of her files are gone... hopefully they aren't. I am now looking into buying an external drive to lessen any further losses... Of course, that is what the backup drive was supposed to do.

AAAAAAARRRRRGH!

Back from our weekend in Ft.Wayne

Came back from our trip to Ft. Wayne to find that our computer had died while we were gone. It is back up to the point of allowing us access to the web but not yet fixed. Thankfully, it is still under warranty and all repairs are free.

Only Child had a wonderful time at the con and is hoping to attend many more. I wish I had a chance to attend more comic/SF conventions when I was her age. Such gatherings and the internet would have given me a much stronger feeling of fellowship with the rest of fandom.

The good news for O.C. is the inaugural gathering at the Anime Crossroads con this November. This might be one of those cons that she attends annually for the rest of her life... if it becomes successful. If you know anyone interested, let them know. I'm hoping it will have an impressive first year.

Recently got good news regarding our finances that will make life a little easier. More on that later.

Don't You... Forget About Him

John Hughes, dead at 59. Wow. That really knocks the wind out of me. The man and his movies (either written or directed or both) helped make the 80's what they were. My love for the 80's is a great one. The music and the movies of that era are some of my favorites, and I owe a great thanks to John Hughes for a lot of that entertainment.

Mr. Mom, Vacation, 16 Candles, The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, Pretty In Pink, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Some Kind of Wonderful, Planes, Trains & Automobiles, She's Having a Baby, The Great Outdoors, Uncle Buck, Career Opportunities and Dutch are some of my favorite movies from this unbelievably talented man. Oh, yeah, he made quite a few crappy movies too; but with the number of arguably classic ones included in the above list, those can be overlooked. No one gets it right every time.

If he had only done Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller's Day Off, that would been more than enough to make him a film legend.

Ego Trips

Former President Bill Clinton visited North Korea and managed to facilitate the release of the 2 journalist sentenced to 12 years in prison for alleged crimes against the country. Having Kim Jong Il's childish ego stroked by having a political rock-star, such as Clinton, personally come to negotiate their release was a savvy play by whoever set up the mission.

Conservative critics are already suggesting that Clinton's visit amounts to negotiating with terrorists. This is such a load of bullshit. Of course, the journalists were treated unfairly/harshly by the North Korean leader and his government. The problem was and is that, in spite of the complete infantile lunacy of Kim Jong Il, North Korea is a sovereign nation and the reporters were in the country illegally... by their laws. Is North Korea a terrorist nation? Is their behavior as a global citizen abhorrent? The answer to those questions are arguably yes. Still, they haven't actually attacked their neighbors nor did they kidnap the journalist from foreign soil and hold them hostage.

The U.S. wants North Korea to behave and put aside childish things (like nuclear weapons) and become a responsible adult. Unfortunately, North Korea, being an unruly child, thinks that if nuclear weapons are good enough for the U.S. then they are good enough for them. I'm not a diplomat (be very, very thankful) so I don't have to make the tough decision regarding how to handle the North Korea situation. I'm just an opinionated blogger who thinks that the Clinton visit was a perfect way to get the journalists released and a first step towards talks with the North Koreans.

We can all agree that Kim Jong Il is a childish twit. We just can't say it if we work for the White House. The problem is that he is a buffoon in charge of a sovereign nation and with nuclear capabilities. Getting the journalists released was a diplomatic coup for us and shouldn't have had anything to do with any other problems we are currently trying to work out with them.

Of course, I too am a buffoon, so I could be completely wrong.

Mini-Adventure

Starting on Thursday, I will be taking another mini-vacation from work. I will be driving Only Child to Ft. Wayne for Ikasucon. She had plans to go for all 3 days with some friends, but as time grew short it looked like it would be too expensive for the stay. Since she had already bought a 3-day pass, I told her I would drive her up on Friday so she could get some use out of her pass; then thought that, if I could scrape up some cash for a hotel for one night, she could get in 2 days of the con. Found the cheapest hotel (I'm not holding out much hope for quality)and booked one night. That will give me someplace to hole up while she's at the con and I want to check out the new Half-Price Books that recently opened.

We are going to do this on the very, very cheap; I plan on taking the makings of PB&J's and some drinks in a cooler and spending nothing more than hotel and gas expenses. O.C. has some spending money for the con and I will take some books/comics and my MP3 Player for entertainment. It isn't luxury but it isn't work either.
Let's hope my car is up to the task. Everyone cross their fingers.

This ad always makes me laugh at how stupid the Americans are. It really doesn't matter which side of this issue you are on... it is amazingly stupid regardless.

Even thought I love them, I am absolutely fine with a tax on snacks and drinks that are bad for us. As long as their is a restriction that the tax can only be a certain percentage of the actual cost of the item is and can NEVER go above that. I do not want a case of the government getting a taste of the easy money and coming back for more of an easy fix like they do with cigarettes.

I think cigarettes are unfairly taxed. The tax on tobacco products should be lowered to a similar percentage (maybe a little higher) and never allowed to be raised. If the taxes were lowered on them, the smokers would buy more anyway and the money would keep on coming. I believe in everyone's right to lead an unhealthy lifestyle.

What makes this ad so damn funny/offensive is this line...

You've got to love such simpleminded thinking. Of course, taxes don't make people healthy.... money to cover the cost of affordable/quality healthcare does!!!!

Beer with me a moment

I've been following the ongoing drama of Henry Louis Gates versus the white establishment.... also known as The Man without much real interest. Until President Obama took sides during a press conference and diminished himself just a tad. This is the man that is supposed to remain calm and collected during tense times and yet can't manage to keep a semblance of objectivity on the matter. Granted, I expected him to come down on one side or the other; and since Professor Gates is a friend, I was sure which side that might be. Unfortunately, the president can't afford the luxury of publicly taking sides. This situation was really not something requiring presidential input... especially at this stage. Being president means knowing when to hold your tongue or parse your words, and remembering the power your opinion might have.

He saved himself by admitting his error and setting up the, now famous, beer summit to help ease the tension between the arresting officer and the professor. Well done, President Mouth.

Which leads me to my opinion... Which I can give because I am not the president. Does anyone besides me see this whole drama as more about ego/pride and ego/testosterone than race? I understand the historical and social aspects behind Professor Gate's view of how things went down; I also understand the high risk of being a policeman. Still, it all seemed to be a case of Don't you know who I am! How dare you! versus If you keep giving me lip, I'm gonna haul your ass downtown!

I believe that not all policemen are racists. I do believe that they are in a high-stress job that often gives them a very short fuse when dealing with those that they are supposed to be serving and protecting. This might not have been the case with officer Crowley as I was not there.

I also believe that Professor Gates, as a black man, has lived his life with the reality of racism and is right to be suspect of authority (we all should be but he has far more reason to). Being confronted by such authority in his own home would make his fuse just as short.

Can't this be a case of short fuses rather than race? Maybe I am naive to hope that this was the case.

He was the voice of news during my childhood and set the standard for all of those that followed him.

I was so excited about the return of Futurama until now. Fox has decided to hire all new actors to voice the characters rather than pay the original cast what they are worth.

I hope that Mark Evanier is correct in his belief that Fox is announcing this to convince the actors to take a lesser deal.

If it does comes to pass, I will not watch a single episode.

Yesterday was a great day! It was the first day of a 6 day vacation from the drudgery of the workplace and the arrival day of Only Child's internet friend from Iowa. The highlight of the day was attending the opening night of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

The record-breaking midnight showings ($22 million) was impressive but more of an indication of fan excitement rather than quality.

Being an avid fan of all things Potter, we had been waiting a long time for this movie.... and it was worth the wait. Inititially, I was worried about the fact that David Yates was going to direct the remaining movies, as I felt that the 5th installment was the weakest of the lot. I was happily surprised to find this installment to be as great an adaptation as the Prisoner of Azkaban.

It was a nice mix of teen-age romantic comedy, drama and tragedy. The young stars have grown into fine actors and gave outstanding performances, but I felt that the best performances were by Gambon, Rickman and Broadbent.

Even as a fan of the books, I found all of the changes worked well and was not too annoyed with the loss of the big aurors vs. deatheaters battle and funeral.

I would urge everyone to go see it, but I don't think anyone will need my seal of approval.

I recorded the entire first season of TNT's Leverage on my DVR but found out too late that there was a problem and episode 12 did not record. By the time I found out, they were not replaying the episodes. I set the DVR to record all episodes and waited... finally, the episode was replayed this week. Unfortunately, there was some NASCAR race on and it ran over just long enough to cut off the last few minutes of the episode.

Damn it!

In spite of my anger/frustration, I recommend you watch the 2nd season premiere on Wednesday, July 15th.

On Friday, Sarah Palin announced her resignation as governor of Alaska with 18 months left in her term.

This was a nice start. Now, if we could get her to move further away... maybe Guam; not that I have anything against Guam.

I would say Good Riddance, but something tells me that she will not go away.

One can hope.

IRS OOPS

Got a letter from the IRS last week...it seems that we made an error on our 2007 return and owe them $900. of course, they want it NOW and are more than willing to add numerous penalties until they do receive it. We sent a reply that we might be able to pay $25 a month towards it and are awaiting their response. I don't understand why they won't just take it out of next year's refund and forgo the penalties; it's not like it was an intentional attempt to cheat on our taxes.

Life's good.

Billy Mays no longer here

They say that celebrity deaths come in 3's and we've reached that in the last week... But wait! That's not all! We are going to throw in a 4th celebrity death at no extra charge!

Yes, Billy Mays, the over-the-top (of his lungs) king of the infomercials has died at the age of 50!

It seemed appropriate to use an exclamation mark. Hmmmm. Maybe we should see about changing that to exclaMAYtion mark in honor of Billy.

The jokes are all too easy and, as a wise man once said, comedy isn't pretty.

All jokes aside, you really have to admire Billy Mays. He became an infomercial icon and was very good at what he did. Furthermore, I think OxiClean is a great product. Billy was seemingly everywhere on the vast TV wasteland and somewhat annoying in his delivery....but admit it, you are going to miss him.

Referring to him as Billy might seem disrespectful, but I think it is a testament to his friendly on-air demeanor that made him such a great salesman. He seemed like a guy that would insist on being called Billy and not Mr. Mays.

My sincere condolences to his family, friends and, yes, his fans!

The Thriller is gone

By now, of course, you have heard the news of Michale Jackson's death. How could you not have heard? The news channel feeding frenzy is at an embarrassing peak.

I must admit that I was never really a fan of Michael Jackson. The Thriller and Bad albums had some good/great tracks and Thriller, itself, has always been one of my faves (more for Vincent Price than Michael).

I watched as millions of others were swept up in the phenomenon of Jackson but could never really understand it. His bizarre behavior and the accusations of pedophilia seemed like just part of the sideshow that was his life in the spotlight. Sometimes the hot glare of fame can really screw a person up (just ask Elvis).

I think the thing that most put me squarely in the non-fan camp was when he proclaimed himself the King of Pop. While it might be arguably true, that should have been left for others to decide. That kind of egotistic masturbation was pathetic.

My opinion aside, my sincere condolences go out to his family (especially his children), friends and millions of fans.
